Courses

The number of sustainability courses and programs being offered by the nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District continues to grow. Existing classes are integrating sustainability dimensions into their curriculum. For example, sustainable design is being included in architecture courses and English courses are incorporating literature on sustainability. Other classes are new additions to the campus catalog. These include several Career and Technical Education courses, such as Energy Auditor, Introduction to Waste Water Treatment, Auto Hybrid Technology, Green Business Certification and Solar Installation. Los Angeles City College

Pending courses:

  • Engineering 101: Will visit businesses that specialize in sustainable technologies. Labs will include introduction to solar panels.
  • Physics Lab: To include demonstrations on white roof technology, solar gain, photovoltaic technology and other subjects.
  • Energy in the Environment: A transferable science course
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE) Community Collaborative: Externship with business and industry

East Los Angeles College

Current programs:

  • Architecture: LEED certification in architecture classes.

Pending courses:

  • Auto Technology: Revision to Electric Vehicle to include other "green" technologies; students will build a high-mileage vehicle and compete against other colleges/universities.
  • Journalism: The college newspaper will be available online.
  • Architecture & Environmental Science: An interdisciplinary course offered by the Architecture and Environmental Science departments.

A number of classes, including Business, Graphics Art, International Trade and Chemistry, plan to incorporate "green" information into the course.

Los Angeles Harbor College

  • Waste Water Treatment I: An introduction to the operation of a waste water treatment plant.
  • Waste Water Treatment II: A continuation of Waste water Treatment I. Topics will include anaerobic treatments, chemistry lab procedures and system hydraulics.

  • AS Degree: Earth Science Requirements include: Astronomy, Elementary Astronomy, Environmental Science, the Human Environment, Geology, Physical Geology, Oceanography, Introduction to Oceanography.
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE) Certificate: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) A skills certificate program designed to train students in the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems.
